Window Washer Falls 10 Floors in Newport News

A window washer in Newport News was hospitalized after he fell ten floors last week. The accident occurred on September 9th in downtown Newport News at the Maritime Square building. The worker was washing windows when his harness failed. He fell 10 stories and landed on another building’s roof.

The worker was airlifted to a local hospital where he remains in recovery. The man suffered a broken foot, broken arm, broken back bones and bruised lungs and heart. He is lucky to be alive.

In a recent interview, the man says he was wearing a safety harness at the time of the accident. He was rappelling down the building when the harness failed for unknown reasons. The Virginia Department of Labor said they will investigate and release an official report on the incident in six months time.

There’s no telling, at this point, why the fall happened. It’s possible that there was some kind of design flaw in the harness, or perhaps the man was improperly trained in safely using the harness. Either way, the window washing company or the harness company might try to pin responsibility on the worker himself to try and escape legal liability.

This kind of victim blaming is very common in workers compensation cases. Companies will do whatever they can to shift blame to their injured employee. This man will likely need an attorney to protect his best interests in the coming weeks and months. We wish his a complete and speedy recovery, and encourage him to contact us for a free consultation.
