Police Officer Injured in DUI Crash

need-an-ambulance-1512594A collision with a drunk driver sent a Caroline County police deputy to the hospital with serious injuries, news reports indicate. The incident occurred around 5:30 AM, when his police cruiser was hit head-on by a pickup truck on Ladysmith Road. The driver crossed over the yellow line and slammed into the police car.

The deputy suffered a fractured foot, leg, and femur, along with other soft tissue injuries. He was taken to the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.

The drunk driver was not injured in the accident, but was arrested at the scene of the incident. He was charged with first offense drunk driving, carrying a concealed weapon while intoxicated and DUI maiming. This charge is reserved only for the most grossly negligent of drunk drivers. If convicted of this charge, the driver faces up to five years in prison and up to $2500 in fines.

We send our best wishes to the injured police deputy for a full recovery. Given the nature of this crash – a head-on collision with a drunk driver – the incident could have been much, much worse. He is expected to make a full recovery, which can’t be said for many people involved in head-on collisions. They are some of the most dangerous kinds of accidents.

Head-on collisions are so deadly because of how little margin for error there is in the average crash. When cars hit head-on, full force, their entire weight pushes forward to slam against the other vehicle. It is no wonder, then, when people are frequently ejected through the windshield in this kind of crash. Indeed, this police deputy got off relatively lucky!
