NHTSA Advocates for Tech to Prevent DUI

istock_000007435695xsmallThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants drinkers to stop driving under the influence of alcohol. Thanks to new technology, society is closer than ever to eliminating drunk drivers. Though it is still in development, the new technology could prevent those with blood alcohol content over the legal limit from starting their vehicle.

The NHTSA has spent the last several years researching technological ways to prevent drunk driving. Now, they’ve begun actual development for the tech. They’re exploring both touch-based and breath-based sensors which could ultimately prevent drunk drivers from starting their car.

Drunk driving is one of the few traffic hazards that is one hundred percent preventable. Though the development of this technology may take some time, it could spell the prevention of hundreds of deaths. Virginia, along with other states, has contributed more than $5 million to fund this research.

While we’re still years away from your car being smart enough to stop you from driving drunk, the battle against drunk drivers continues. The holidays mark one of the worst times of year for drinking and driving accidents. Holiday parties and celebrations at New Years often go hand and hand with drunk driving. This year, make sure you have a plan to get home safely before you begin drinking.

More than 10,000 people are killed each year in accidents involving drunk drivers. In addition to their announcement about the new technology they are developing, the NHTSA announced their new campaign Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. You can learn more about it on their website.
