Guardrails Installed in VA Beach After Fatal Crashes

Five sections of guardrail have been installed along I-264 after two fatal crashes occurred along the stretch of highway. The Virginia Department of Transportation decided to implement the safety devices near the Birdneck Road exit after two people were killed in 2016 and two more in 2017. The decision to install the guardrails comes after a lengthy review of the current landscape and how it impacted colliding cars.

The 2016 Crash

The earlier of the two crashes occurred when a Chrysler Pacifica was headed westbound on I-264. The vehicle crossed over the median and struck a Lexus heading the other direction. Upon striking the Lexus, the Pacifica flipped in the air and struck a van. The driver of the Lexus and a passenger in the Pacifica were killed in the incident.

The 2017 Crash

In a similar incident in the following year, a Ford Taurus crossed the median and struck a Toyota Corolla before hitting a Suzuki Sidekick. Two drivers involved in the wreck died.

The Impact of a Guardrail

The installation of a new guardrail will hopefully prevent further collisions from occurring. Should a driver start to lose focus or fall asleep behind the wheel, their vehicle will strike the high-impact guardrail instead of going straight through the grassy median. When they perform as intended, guardrails can be life-saving devices. Unfortunately, though, some guardrails are known to do more harm than good. No details about what kind of guardrails were installed were made available.

We applaud this new addition to make roads safer in Virginia Beach!
