Four Vehicles Collide in Norfolk

need-an-ambulance-1512594One person was injured in an accident that closed down I-264 west in Norfolk on Tuesday. The December 6, 2016 accident occurred around 8:17 at night.

Not much is known at this time about the accident. We do know, however, that at least one person was taken to the hospital with injuries.

For locals, hearing about an accident in this spot – I-264 near the Berkley Bridge – comes as no surprise. This part of the highway is notoriously bad for traffic. When out-of-town drivers pass through, it can be a dicey spot to navigate. Rain, ice and other bad weather can make it even more difficult.

Hampton Roads is full of bridges and tunnels locals must contend with each day. Many of us forget how foreign a concept they are to folks from other parts of the country. And with so many military families constantly relocating to the area, it helps to be patient with confused drivers.

There’s no precise formula for avoiding a run-in with a nervous driver, but thankfully, there are strategies all drivers should employ no matter the situation.

When on the highway, leave plenty of space for drivers to safely pass and change lanes. Keep your attention on the road so you can drive defensively. When you’re approaching your exit, begin changing lanes far earlier than you need to. Even if it means slowing down to drive behind a truck, eliminating last minute lane changes can save lives.
