Biker Killed in Newport News Crash
A motorcyclist has died from injuries sustained in a crash that occurred in Newport News this week. The December 21, 2017 wreck happened just before 6:30 PM near Jefferson Avenue and Newport Avenue. Police say they arrived on scene to find that a motorcycle and car had collided at a high speed. The motorcyclist was seriously injured in the wreck and was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds. Two people in the car were also injured in the wreck. The accident remains under investigation, and at this point, no charges have been filed.
Why motorcycle accidents are so deadly
Motorcyclists have a reputation for being daredevils, but they must practice extremely safe driving when on the open road. Because they lack the protective shell offered by traditional cars and trucks, motorcyclists are far more likely to suffer life-threatening injuries in a crash than other motorists. With this in mind, most bikers are sure to drive defensively to protect themselves. While we don’t know the exact string of events that led to this fatal crash, chances are good that the biker was simply acting out of self-preservation.
Options for surviving family members
The victim’s family may be entitled to compensation if they can prove that the victim did not contribute to the wreck. Virginia wrongful death statutes allow survivors to pursue legal action against those who cause fatal accidents. A Virginia motorcycle accident lawyer can help families investigate their legal options and ensure their rights are protected.
