30 Car Pileup Causes Injuries, Death in Fairfax Co.
An early morning accident in Fairfax County, Virginia hospitalized four people and claimed the life of one man. The Saturday, December 17, 2016 accident on I-495 occurred just after 5:00 in the morning. Police say icy conditions caused at least 30 vehicles to collide.
Investigators are still working to discover exactly how this incident went down, but given the freezing temperatures and slick roads, it isn’t hard to guess that icy conditions contributed to the crash. Reports show that initial collisions occurred when multiple cars slipped and slid across icy patches of the highway. Thankfully, the majority of the damage was limited to the vehicles involved.
Unfortunately, though, not everyone made it out from the incident unscathed. Four people were taken to the hospital with injuries. The body of a man was found about a mile from the crash zone. Police speculate that he was involved in the collision and had walked away from his disabled vehicle.
Our thoughts go out to the victims still recovering and to the family of the man killed in the crash. Accidents like this one are especially tragic given that the holidays are right around the corner.
Icy roads are deceptively dangerous, especially when you need to get somewhere. Icy roads don’t grab headlines the way snowfall does, so some drivers might not even be aware of dangerous conditions until they are already on the road. That’s why it’s always a good idea to check the weather and traffic conditions before hitting the road. Even a relatively clear day can become dangerous should temperatures drop below freezing.
