Traffic Deaths On the Rise Nationally

The National Safety Council reports that traffic deaths are up 16 percent in the first six months of 2021. As more people begin hitting the road to travel or return to the office after months of working from home, the deadly trend negates 16 years of progress in preventing traffic deaths around the country. In the first half of this year alone, the NSC estimates more than 21,000 people have died in traffic accidents.

“Our Roads are Becoming Riskier”

National Safety Council vice president Mark Chung says our roads are “becoming riskier not only each day but each year.” There are several factors to point to when determining why that is. For starters, drivers are more distracted than ever before. While passengers and the radio might have once been the leading causes of distraction behind the wheel, we’re now more tempted than ever to take our eyes off the road to look at our phones. Each year, thousands die from preventable cell phone-related crashes.

Drunk and drugged drivers also play a role in making our roads more dangerous. As marijuana legalization becomes more widespread in the United States, we can expect to see more motorists driving under the influence. While it might seem safer than driving drunk, operating a vehicle while high is incredibly dangerous and should not be normalized.

Staying Safe Behind the Wheel

The next time you get behind the wheel, take a few precautionary measures to prevent accidents from happening. Always wear your seat belt and consider keeping your phone out of arm’s reach. If you plan to imbibe, make sure to arrange for a designated driver before you begin drinking. It’s also important to keep an eye out on recalls announced by auto manufacturers. By keeping your vehicle in good working order, you’ll minimize the risk of something going wrong while you’re on the road.
