Celebrating Cinco De Mayo Safely

It’s the 5th of May, which means Mexican restaurants nationwide will be overflowing with crowds hungry for nachos, burritos and of course, margaritas. And like other holidays celebrated with boozy cocktails, the roads tonight will be more dangerous than your average evening. Add in the fact that it’s a Friday and the weather is warm, and you’ve got a potential recipe for messy, dangerous roads.

Statistics don’t lie. Looking back on previous Cinco De Mayo crash stats, you’ll see a troubling pattern – people are far more likely to drive drunk on the holiday. Crash data from 2015 reveals that almost one-third of all fatal collisions on Cinco De Mayo involved drunk drivers.

Unlike delicious guacamole and a margarita, alcohol, and driving just don’t mix. Even one drink can impair your ability to think clearly and focus on the road. Too often, folks begin drinking without first determining how they’ll get home. By the end of the night, they’re often too drunk to make smart decisions about driving. That’s why anyone going out for drinks tonight should arrange for a designated driver to take them home before they head out for the evening. With ridesharing apps like Lyft and Uber more popular than ever, there’s simply no reason to ever risk driving drunk.

Fun fact: Cinco De Mayo is a much bigger holiday in the United States than it is in Mexico! The day is often mistakenly referred to as Mexico’s independence day – in fact, it celebrates a victorious battle versus the French back in 1862!
