Norfolk Women Sentenced for Medicaid Fraud

A Norfolk woman will spend a year in prison after defrauding Medicaid, news reports say. The owner of P&S Home Health Care Solutions, based in Portsmouth, reportedly caused the healthcare assistance program to lose approximately $863,000. Each recipient of Medicaid services must be assessed by a registered nurse to qualify for benefits. Instead, the owner forged signatures of a registered nurse who never worked for her company. She also billed thousands of dollars for services that recipients weren’t qualified for or never received.

Medicaid Fraud: All Too Common

While we’d like to believe that these kinds of news stories are outliers, the statistics suggest otherwise. The FBI estimates Medicaid and Medicare fraud costs the national economy over $80 billion per year. Those who defraud government healthcare programs do more than just line their own pockets – they rob their fellow Americans of affordable, effective healthcare. Unfortunately, fraud is often difficult to detect without the help of brave whistleblowers who speak up and alert authorities of their concerns.

Wise Words from the U.S. Attorney for Virginia’s Eastern District

“Varzmanesh lied to, cheated, and stole from taxpayers and healthcare providers,” G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia told reporters. “When someone commits healthcare fraud, it drives up the cost of care for everyone and creates an unfair playing field. Sandy Varzmanesh falsified records that put Medicaid recipients at risk, and lied about providing care in order to steal taxpayer money. I want to thank our team, the FBI, and the Virginia Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for their terrific work on this complex and important case.”
