Roanoke County Car Accident Injures 3; driver had no license and gets DUI

July 5, 2011

According to the Roanoke Times, three people were taken to the hospital after a car accident, which occurred on West Main Street near Campbell Drive in Roanoke County.

Lee McKinney and a passenger were working on a Toyota pickup, with the hazard lights on, they were driving in that had broken down.  Hurbert Fields III driving a Nissan Versa stopped to help with the truck, parking his vehicle face to face in order to try and jump the Toyota.  Another motorist in a Mustang also stopped to assist.

While working on the vehicle David Benitez, who was driving a Nissan truck, struck the Mustang from behind, causing it the Mustang to hit the Toyota, and then the Toyota to hit the Nissan Versa.

Hurbert Fields, who was in between his vehicle and the Toyota, was then pinned between the vehicles. Fields was airlifted from the scene to Roanoke Memorial, and the others were taken to a nearby hospital.

David Benitez fled the accident, but was eventually stopped by police.

Benitez was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, driving without a license and without insurance.
