How Did This Happen? The defective drywall, also known as wallboard, gypsum board, or plasterboard, arrived at about 2 dozen ports around the country with 7 of them in Florida, but including New York, Texas, New Orleans, and California. During the housing boom after Hurricane Katrina, among other storms, from 2004 through 2006, the strain on the supply of domestic drywall required many builders to resort to international suppliers to fill the demand.
Many imported drywall from a German-based company, Knauf, with subsidiaries in China (such as Knauf Tianjin). Reports are showing that millions of pounds of Chinese drywall entered the US during this time frame and that is was used across the country in thousands of homes, condos, and office buildings. Most foreign manufacturers stopped shipping drywall to the US in 2007, after the building boom was over.
However, it has been discovered that another manufacturer, Taian Taishan (based in Taian, China), continued to ship large quantities of drywall to New York and Port Everglades into the summer of 2007. It appears that at least 550 million pounds of Chinese drywall have arrived at US ports since 2006. That is enough to construct 60,000 average-sized homes.

Alert: Chinese Drywall in Your Home May Cause Illness
Hydrogen sulfide, the compound that causes a noxious rotten egg smell, was not found in the air quality reports. However, tests administered directly from the Chinese drywall material itself, revealed that higher concentrations of hydrogen sulfides were indeed present. Knauf Tianjin, a Chinese drywall manufacturer who has had reports of problems with their drywall, reported that test administered on the drywall in 2006 also found high concentrations of hydrogen sulfides.
Since the Consumer Product Safety Commission began receiving complaints from many homeowners across the United States they have continued to investigate these homes that have been tested and confirmed to have Chinese drywall.
Monthly updates on the progress the CPSC have made can be followed at www.CPSC.gov/info/drywall. "CPSC has received about 2,833 reports from residents in 37 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico who believe their health symptoms or the corrosion of certain metal components in their homes are related to the presence of drywall produced in China. State and local authorities have also received similar reports."
Elemental and chemical, chamber, in-home indoor air sampling, and electrical and fire safety tests are being conducted results are expected to be released starting late October.
Property Values Plunging Deeper

Why can't the Comsumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just recall the defective Chinese drywall?
Description: The investigations, the tasks which were charged to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were initiated to establish a nexus between the reported damages stemming from 32 states. The damages reported have been both health and property related. Most complaints are alleging respiratory symptoms, headaches, and other like symptoms. Property reports tend to be associated with sulfur-like odors in the home that make habitation unbearable, the corrosion of metals, and damages to piping and air conditioning units.
Description: One home inspector, according to news source lawyersandsettlements.com, Florida, Louisiana, [and Virginia] are not alone with regard to affected states. Texas has even seen its share of reports. The overarching question seems to be where to pin liability. The Chinese entities involved complicate the multidistrict litigation where trials are expected to begin in early 2010. Likely, the distributors will bear the brunt of much of the responsibility, according to the aforementioned home inspector. As an expert witness, he noted that while the cases he has been involved in did not go to trial, the Chinese manufacturer was not accountable.

Apparently, as many as 600 people filed lately but the lead plaintiff counsel expressed plans to attempt to let those stragglers in the mix.
