New Years Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested

speedway-1198194Police have apprehended the person responsible for a fatal hit-and-run crash in Virginia Beach. The accident occurred around 1:40 AM on January 1, 2018. The collision occurred when the driver of a Dodge Durango struck a Ford Focus near the intersection of South Independence Boulevard and Bonney Road. The driver of the Durango fled the scene on foot while the driver of the Ford sustained life-threatening injuries. The victim died later that day.

Authorities have arrested the man they believe to have been behind the wheel of the Durango that night. The 26-year-old was charged with reckless driving, driving on a suspended/revoked operators license, no seat belt and possession and transport of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Justice for Victims

This arrest is likely reassuring to the victim’s family who probably want nothing more than justice for their loss. There are few things as callous as fleeing the scene of such a horrific crash, but hit-and-run crashes like this one sadly happen all the time. While there is still a long legal road ahead before the accused is convicted and sentenced for his alleged crimes, we hope that the arrest brings the family of the victim some peace and resolution.

Why Drivers Flee the Scene of Accidents

Most people would never dream of leaving the scene of an accident, but when they do, they often have something to hide. Given that this man had previous felonies on his record and had a firearm on him at the time, it is unfortunately not surprising he fled.
