Millions of Americans Admit to Drunk Driving

Most of us would never dream of climbing behind the wheel after several drinks at a bar, restaurant or friend’s house. Unfortunately for the large majority of Americans, the small percentage of people who do decide to drive drunk endanger the lives of everyone on the road. Surprisingly, though, that small percentage isn’t as small as one might think. In fact, a new survey reveals that 4.2 million people admit to driving drunk at least one time in the last month. This equates to roughly 2 percent of the entire American population.

The survey, analyzed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, was able to draw conclusions about the demographics of the typical drunk driver. Unsurprisingly, they are overwhelmingly young, male and binge drinkers. The Midwest is the worst region for such drivers.

An Epidemic

Drunk driving accidents have accounted for about one third of all traffic fatalities in the last twenty years. This is truly an epidemic claiming the lives of our nation’s young people. Binge drinking has always been common among youths, but when vehicles are thrown into the mix, it’s a recipe for tragedy. Four percent of the adults surveyed are considered to be binge drinkers. Given the fact that many of these same folks don’t buckle up when they’re in the car, it’s no wonder fatalities are as high as they are.

Finding a Safe Way Home

The next time you’re heading out on the town for a good time with friends, make sure everyone has a safe way to get home. With the increasing popularity of apps like Uber and Lyft, there’s no reason anyone should make the dangerous, selfish choice to drive drunk.
