The Johnson Mathers Nursing Home in Carlisle, Kentucky is being sued, by the estate of a resident who choked to death, for falsifying documents to conceal wrongful acts.
According to
Kentucky.com, the patient Lorrine M. Wheeler was only in the nursing home for 10 days and was put on a pureed diet due to difficulties eating.
A citation, issued by The Cabinet for Health Facility Services after the accident, and the lawsuit both claim that Nurse Joyce Fulton heard the patient "gurgling." Instead of helping the patient Fulton left her alone, without notifying other staff members, to clean a dirty suction machine. After she spent 15 to 20 minutes cleaning the machine, the lawsuit states that she took about 10 minutes to return to Wheeler's room.
When she did return, Fulton tried to suction the patient, could not clear her choking, and then notified staff that she thought the patient was dead. Wheeler died in the emergency room of the Johnson Mathers Hospital connected to the nursing home.
