The Jordan Bridge has been open since August 24, 1928, but after assessing major structural issues last month, the city council voted to close the Jordan Bridge. These issues require millions of dollars in repairs.
City Officials say that the closing will moderately affect traffic. They predict the real traffic nightmare will occur when Gilmerton Bridge project begins in July. The Gilmerton Bridge project is supposed to last 40 months, reducing a section of Military Highway from 4 to 2 lanes.
A Hampton Roads Metro Planning Organization reported that these projects will more than likely increase traffic to 3 mile backups at the Downtown Tunnel, and about 3.9 miles at the Midtown Tunnel.
The Jordan Bridge will now be removed from city maps so that it is not included in driving routes provided by generated directions.
The bridge is set to be demolished sometime within the next six months to a year. A memorial service will likely be held sometime in April.
