Hattiesburg, Mississippi Contains Highest Proportion of Childhood Blood Lead Levels

"Lead has been described as the number one environmental threat to the health of children in the United States," said Mitra, who conducts ongoing research on lead poisoning in children in his native country of Bangladesh.

Recent statistical data has shown that Hattiesburg, Mississippi has the highest proportion of children with elevated blood lead levels in the state.

The University of Southern Mississippi has announced that they will be collaborating with local organizations this year to address this problem.

"We analyzed 42,372 records of children in Mississippi from January 1999-2003 and found that 2,446 had high blood lead levels that exceeded 10 units. Hattiesburg had the highest proportion of childhood blood lead levels."
