I-64 HRBT Car Accident Critically Injures 3 VDOT Workers & 3 Others

A two vehicle car accident injured six people this morning on Interstate 64. The accident occurred on the westbound lanes of I-64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel around 2 a.m., and shut down all westbound lanes until 7:30 a.m.

A 2005 Volkswagen GTI was speeding down I-64 when it veered onto the left lane and hit a VDOT/TME truck. The VDOT truck was in reverse within an enclosed lane picking up cones with the other vehicle struck it.

Two Virginia Department of Transportation workers were injured after being ejected from the truck.  The three people in the Volkswagen were also injured.  All 6 people were taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the car accident and charges are currently pending.
