DOT shuts down Sky Express Inc. after a fatal accident
Four people are dead and more than 50 others
were in the hospital
after a tour bus flipped on I-95, about 30 miles north of
Richmond, Virginia in Caroline County Tuesday.
A closer look at the discount bus service that ran the trip revealed that the Charlotte, NC based Sky Express Inc. was already under threat of being shut down by federal transportation authorities. According to an article from
the Associated Press, the only reason it was still operating was because it received a 10 day extension to file an appeal. Otherwise the company would have been shutdown last Saturday.
The Department of Transportation has officially shut down Sky Express Inc. for violating multiple federal safety regulations and is now indefinitely prohibited from offering interstate transportation. Sky Express buses have been involved in four crashes, which have all resulted in injury or fatality. In addition, it was cited for 46 violations of driver fatigue.
The driver, Kin Yiu Cheung was been charged with reckless driving, fatigue being a factor.
Among those killed in the accident were Karen Blyden-Decastro of NY, Sie Giok Giang of PA, Josefa Torres of NY, and Denny Estefany Martinez of NJ.
