Man Distracted by Cell Phone Causes 5 Car Accident on Route 58 in Suffolk

September 9, 2011

A man distracted by a ringing cell phone caused a five vehicle wreck on US Route 58 in Suffolk last Monday.

Dennis Wayne Butler of Courtland, Va was driving a truck owned by Butler Trucking LLC when he failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Holland Road and the downtown bypass.

The truck slammed into a Toyota Camry pushing the Toyota into a Dodge Dakota. The Camry then went under the the Dodge Dakota causing it to flip several times during which it hit another vehicle. The last vehicle involved was hit with unsecured objects that had flown out of the Dodge.

According to the Suffolk News-Herald, none of the drivers were seriously injured.

Mr. Butler has a pending reckless driving citation.

Automobile accidents caused by distracted drivers lead to serious injuries and death everyday across the state of Virginia. Despite the fact that many drivers seem to have no concerns about talking or texting away on their cell-phone while driving, research has found that cell-phone use is a major cause of driver distraction.
