A
Newport News man was killed Friday night when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a house, according to the
Virginian-Pilot.
Jason W. Archer was pronounced dead at an area hospital after the crash. Archer, 29, was riding south on Aster Way when he apparently lost control and struck a home at the corner of
Aster Way and Angelina Way. Archer lived in the Kingstowne Apartments on
Blake Loop in the Oyster Point section of Newport News.
"The investigation revealed that the victim was riding a motorcycle without a helmet on Aster Way when he lost control and struck a home in the first block of Angelina Way," a
Newport News police spokeswoman told the
Daily Press.
WVEC-TV reported that Archer was not wearing a helmet.
The summer of 2009 has been a deadly one for motorcyclists. According to a
Virginian-Pilot database of motorcycle crashes, there have been at least 11 fatal motorcycle accidents since the beginning of May. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has these
safety tips for motorcyclists:
•
Be visible. Drivers have a hard time seeing motorcyclists at night, so always use headlights. Wear reflective materials, and be aware of blind spots.
• Dress for safety. Wear a helmet and eye protection, wear protective clothing, and remember that only clothing will be between you and the road in the event of an accident.
• Apply effective mental strategies. Always watch for changing conditions, give motorists the opportunity and time to see you, and give yourself the time and opportunity to respond to autos or obstructions.
