Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter l Lawsuits l Pulmonary Embolus, Deep Vein Thrombosis

An Inferior Vena Cava Filter, also referred to as an IVC Filter, is used to prevent pulmonary embolus (blockage of the lung artery).  These devices are usually implanted into a person's inferior vena cava after finding blood clots in their veins.  The device is used to catch the blood clots and keep them from reaching the lungs or heart.

The initial purpose for the device was to treat Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  According to the National Institutes of Health, DVT "is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein that is deep inside the body."  The condition usually affects larger veins in the thighs and lower legs.  The blood clot can prevent normal blood flow, and even cause severe damage if it breaks free and gets stuck in the heart, lungs, brain, etc.

The entire device or pieces of the device have been known to fracture and migrate to the lungs and the health causing immediate medical attention.

IVC filters can cause:
Severe and reoccurring pain in the heart or other parts of the body,
cardiac tamponade (bleeding in or around the heart),
pulmonary embolus (blockage of a blood vessel in the lungs by blood clots),
hematoma (blood the collects under the skin or in an organ),
perforation or puncturing to the vena cava wall and the heart,
perforation or puncturing to lungs,
respiratory compromise, internal bleeding, infection,
other serious complications/injuries and death

If you or a loved one has sustained an injury due to a defective IVC filter,
