An elderly woman was killed and the driver was critically injured Saturday when her car ran off a road, hit an electrical transformer and then flipped over.
Edith Frey, 61, of Manassas Park, was driving her 2004 Saturn in the 8700 block of Quarry Road in Manassas just after 7 p.m. when she ran off the road and knocked over several traffic signs.
After running over the signs, the car, with Frey and her 87-year-old passenger, Elfreda Cycholl, then hit an electrical transformer. Cycholl was killed instantly. Frey was flown to INOVA Fairfax Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The circumstances of the crash were still under investigation, and it is not known whether alcohol or speed was a factor.
We would like to extend our condolences to the Cycholl family and friends.
