If you were going to drive in a situation with less visibility, a greater chance of encountering an impaired driver, and a higher probability you’ll be tired and distracted – would you be more or less inclined to take one extra step towards safety?
It seems counterintuitive, but new statistics from the NHTSA show that seatbelt use actually goes down at night, when drivers are most likely to need the extra protection. Teenagers and males of all ages are the worst offenders, and they are much more likely than other drivers to fail to buckle up when the sun goes down.
Now that the nationwide Click It or Ticket seatbelt awareness campaign is drawing to a close, the NHTSA and state law enforcement officials will begin compiling statistics about the effectiveness of this year’s outreach efforts. Hopefully they’ll find that more people are getting the message about the importance of safety belts in reducing auto accident injuries and fatalities.
