David Hines of Virginia Beach died in a motorcycle crash on Land of Promise Road in Chesapeake Saturday night, the Daily Press reported.
Many details of the crash are not yet clear. Hines, 43, was riding in the 1100 block of Land of Promise Road when he crashed and was thrown from his motorcycle, the newspaper said.
Rescuers were called to the crash scene at 9:18 p.m., The Virgnian-Pilot reported. The crash happened about a half-mile east of Centreville Turnpike in rural southern Chesapeake.
Hines was pronounced dead at the scene, a Chesapeake Police Department spokeswoman told WVEC-TV.
Hines lived in the 5400 block of Blue Knob Road in Virginia Beach.
The crash was the fourth fatal motorcycle accident in Chesapeake in 2009 and the 17th overall in Southside Hampton Roads, according to a database of fatal crashes maintained by The Virginian-Pilot.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has these tips to keep motorcycle riders safe:
– Be visible. Have a working headlight and tail light, wear reflective materials, don’t be afraid to use your horn and keep in mind that drivers often have a hard time seeing motorcyclists.
– Apply effective mental strategies. Always watch for changes in road conditions, keep time and safety margins generous, give other motorists time to see you, don’t ride when tired, follow the rules of the road, and don’t exceed the speed limit.
