Last week Best Buy, the largest US Electronics retailer, settled an
employee discrimination lawsuit. Nine current/former employees and one job applicant are to split $200,000 and $10 million is to go towards legal fees and costs, according to
Reuters.
The lawsuit was filed in 2005 in the U.S. District Court in Oakland, CA. The plaintiffs alleged that Best Buy denied desirable job assignments, promotions, and transfers to African American, Latino, and female employees.
Best Buy has also agreed to a for year consent order to implement better hiring, job assignment, and promotion practices.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act states that covered employers are prohibited to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
